The Child will be encouraged to behave in a more acceptable manner. Good behaviour is always praised, Children are regularly praised throughout the day. I try to give the Children a homely environment rather like home from home. I also try to keep the Child in the same routine that you have developed, as Children grow Children's routines change, this will be discussed with parents at regular intervals. A gentle Education is provided eg counting how many bricks have been stacked up or talking about what colour bricks or toys we are playing with etc. An Annual contract signed by both myself and Parents/Guardians is drafted before minding begins. CHILD PROTECTION PROCEDURE

My first responsibility and priority is towards the children in my care. If I have any cause for concern I will report it, following the local Safeguarding Children Board procedures in England, The relevant local procedures that are held by me are available on request. I understand that child abuse can be physical, sexual, emotional, neglect or a mixture of these. I must notify Ofsted of any allegations of abuse, which are alleged to have taken place while the child is in my care. I keep up to date with child protection issues and relevant legislation by taking regular training courses and by reading relevant publications i.e. Who Minds? This helps me be aware of the signs of abuse or neglect and what to do if I have a concern. I have copies of, and am familiar with, the local Safeguarding Children Board procedures. Every six months I check that I have the latest version of the relevant procedures (or any documents that may replace them in the future). I have a copy of the relevant booklets and guidance (as outlined in the NCMA booklet Safeguarding Children: a Guide for Childminders), I have read them and understand them. If I am concerned about a child’s welfare, I may contact the local authority, the NSPCC, the National Childminding Association (NCMA), or other relevant support services for advice, providing this does not affect confidentiality. Child protection concerns that could identify a particular child are kept confidential and only shared with people who need to know this information. Parents must notify me of any concerns they have about their child and any accidents, incidents or injuries affecting the child, which will be recorded. I work together with parents to make sure the care of their child is consistent. Please see my Working with Parents policy. If I notice: significant changes in behaviour unexpected bruising or marks any comments made which give me cause for concern deterioration in general wellbeing which causes concern I will implement the local Safeguarding Children Board procedures, without delay to minimise any risk to the child. I will call the local social services’ duty desk and follow it up with a letter within 48 hours. I will keep a factual record of the concern and will ask the parents for an explanation, providing it would not put the child at risk. The national standards for registered childminders in England and Wales require me to let Ofsted or CSIW know of any concerns that I have reported without delay. If a child tells me that they or another child is being abused, I will: Show that I have heard what they are saying, and that I take their allegations seriously Encourage the child to talk, but I will not prompt them or ask them leading questions. I will not interrupt when a child is recalling significant events and will not make a child repeat their account Explain what actions I must take, in a way that is appropriate to the age and understanding of the child Write down what I have been told using exact words where possible Make a note of the date, time, place and people who were present at the discussion Then report my concerns immediately to the duty social worker who has the experience and responsibility to make an assessment of the situation. If an allegation is made against me, I will report it to Ofsted and social services following the Safeguarding Children Board procedures. I will also contact NCMA’s safeguarding children service on for advice and support. In all instances I will record: the child’s full name and address the date and time of the record factual details of the concern, for example bruising, what the child said, who was present details of any previous concerns details of any explanations from the parents any action taken such as speaking to parents. It is not my responsibility to attempt to investigate the situation myself.

 Equal opportunities

I will make sure that I actively promote equality of opportunity and anti-discriminatory practices for all children. I will make sure that I treat all children with equal concern and respect. ) I recognise and welcome all legislation and existing codes of practice, produced by appropriate commissions, for example the Equal Opportunities Commission. I value and respect the different racial origins, religions, cultures and languages in a multi-ethnic society so that each child is valued as an individual without racial or gender stereotyping. I will also not discriminate against children on the grounds of disability, sexual orientation, age, class, family status, and HIV/Aids status. I provide equal chances for each child to learn and develop to their full potential, taking into account each child’s age and stage of development, gender, ethnicity, home language, and ability. I provide and make sure that all children have access to a range of books, puzzles and other toys which provide positive images and examples of the diversity of life in our society. I challenge racist and discriminatory remarks, attitudes and behaviour from the children in my care and adults. I will always help children to feel good about themselves and others, by celebrating the differences which make us all unique individuals.

Complaints

As a registered childminder I aim to work in close partnership with all parents, to meet the needs of their children. If there is any aspect of my service you are not happy with please bring it to my attention. This would probably be verbally and every effort will be made to resolve the issue through frank and open discussion. If you prefer, you can put the complaint formally in writing or by email to me. I have a mandatory duty to investigate all complaints relating to the national standards for childminding. Depending on the nature of the complaint, I will investigate it myself or it will be passed on to Ofsted to investigate. For impartial advice, you can call the NCMA Information Line on 0800 169 4486. Complaints will be treated sensitively. You will be notified of the outcome and receive a copy of any written records regarding the complaint within 28 days. All equipment is fitted with the correct safety harnesses to prevent accidents, for example highchair and pushchairs. Car seats are checked regularly to ensure they are correctly fitted. If necessary I will get them checked with the Road Safety Team at the Widmore Centre. I will never use a second hand carseat, as I do not know its history. My car has a regular service and MOT. I keep the safety locks on the back doors working. My car insurance is for Business use. I use safety equipment appropriate for the children in my care, ie stair gates, fire guard etc. These are checked regularly. I will keep my front door locked with the keys on a hook up high to prevent the children opening the door to strangers.A cctv camera is also in use during minded hours so that I know who i am opening the door to at all times. I have procedures in place in the event of a fire (see separate policy) I keep my kitchen very clean, following hygiene guidelines on the storing of food, keeping the fridge at the correct temperature etc I ensure that the children do not have access to any waste, the bins are emptied daily and any used nappies are double wrapped and placed in the outdoor rubbish bin. If you have any concerns regarding the health and safety of your child please discuss them with me

Garden Equipment Policy

It is well known that exercise is vital to aid the physical development of young children and to encourage them to continue a healthy lifestyle into their adult years. As an Ofsted Registered Childminder I encourage the children in my care to join in all sorts of different physical activities and provide a range of resources to make it fun and enjoyable. In my garden I have a range of outdoor equipment. Whilst this provides lots of opportunities for developing new physical skills and enjoyment it also brings danger. Children need to learn about danger and risk taking, however in order to make my garden a safe environment and to reduce the risk of possible accidents I have put the following procedures in place: All minded children will be supervised by a responsible adult at all times Children will be taught the dangers of the equipment in a way that is suitable for their stage of development and understanding Children will be encouraged to take turns and share equipment The equipment will be checked/cleaned before use for animal faeces The equipment will be checked for wear and tear/ damage regularly and withdrawn from use if faulty. Children will be encouraged to participate but will not be made to do any activity that they are uncomfortable with. If you have any concerns regarding your child using any piece of equipment in my garden please do discuss them with me.

 Medicine Policy

I am happy to give your child non-prescribed medication, such as cough mixture, Calpol or nurofen, teething gel etc, but only if you have signed a parental permission form for me to do so. This permission form will be regularly reviewed to ensure that there are no changes, for example a child may no longer be able to take some medication or may need an additional form. Even though you may have signed a form, I will still contact you by telephone to check that I can administer this medication. This is to protect your child, you and myself. It is vital that you inform me of any medication you may have given your child before they arrive into my care. I need to know what medicine they have had, the dose and time given. I will ensure that all medication given to me will be stored correctly and I will check that it is still within its expiry date, If your child has a self-held medication please obtain an additional one for me to be kept at my home. Older children can easily forget to bring home an inhaler. What could be a simple puff of ventalin then turns into a major incident and a trip to the hospital. If your child has acute allergies and carries/needs an epipen, please discuss the matter with me. I may need additional training to administer these forms of medication. If your child needs to take medication prescribed by a doctor, please discuss this with me. I will need you to sign an additional permission form. In some cases a child on antibiotics may be asked not to attend for 2-3 days in case they react to the medication and to prevent the spread of an infection to others. All medicine given to me to administer must be in its original bottle/container and not decanted. It must have the manufacturers guidelines on it and if a prescription medication the details from the Doctor/pharmacy. I will record all medication administered in my book and request a parental signature at the end of each day. If you have any concerns regarding medication please do not hesitate to discuss them with me.

Documentation Policy

I keep efficient and effective documentation of records, policies and procedures. This enables me to run the setting efficiently and complies with national and local legislation and guidelines and ensures the safety, welfare, learning and wellbeing of the children. All individual children’s records are shared with their parents. I recognise that the purpose of compiling any documentation is to: meet children’s needs & put policy into practice within the setting and keep account of significant data maintain necessary documentation relating to Premises and Children I ensure that documentation is accurate, relevant and succinct. I develop efficient systems for the management and upkeep of documentation so that the process is not cumbersome or time-consuming. I keep records stored safely and securely. I ensure that documentation is accessible for those with authority of access. I ensure that confidentiality of records is maintained. I share records about individual children with their parents. I record the following significant changes and notify the Early Years Childcare Inspector of: Changes to the premises, Allegations of abuse, Significant events Serious illness or accidents I keep all records until after the next Ofsted Inspection (this is a minimum requirement). Nappy and Toilet Training Policy

I am happy to accept babies and children in nappies. I will need you to provide me with the following: Nappies Any cream that you use on your child Baby wipes I will provide a changing mat, which will be wiped over with disinfectant between each use and nappy sacks for the disposal of used nappies. I will always use plastic gloves when changing your child’s nappy to reduce risk. If your child is allergic to these please let me know. I am happy to take a child in real/cloth nappies. I will change your child regularly and immediately if they have soiled a nappy. I believe that changing a nappy should provide lots of opportunity to communicate with your child and as their understanding grows provide time to discuss basic hygiene issues, preparing them for potty training. (Examples of this can be found in the Birth to three matters framework) When your child starts to show signs that they are becoming aware of their bodily functions I will arrange a convenient time to meet with you and discuss your plans on potty/toilet training your child. It is unusual for a child to be ready to be potty trained much before their second birthday and for some children it can be a lot later. Please do not be concerned if your child shows no signs of being ready yet. It is very important that we work together to potty train your child and pick a suitable time to do it, when we can both dedicate time. If we start the training and your child is not ready then we can stop and start again when they are. Some children take to potty training overnight for some it is a longer process, the most important thing is that we work together to give your child the support and reassurance they need during this period. I will provide you with daily feedback on how we are progressing with the training. In order to help your child become independent in going to the toilet I can provide the following equipment: Potties Toilet trainer seat Steps for the toilet and the wash basin Please let me know if you wish to discuss your child’s potty training.

Policy On Biting

Biting can be an uncomfortable subject for parents of both the biter and the child who is bitten. I hope that this policy will explain how I deal with biting in my home. Please do discuss any concerns you may have regarding this issue with me. If your child is known to bite I would prefer to know in advance. Children bite for a variety of reasons. This may be because they are teething, frustrated, exploring using their mouth, asserting their independence and wanting to gain control, maybe of a toy or they could be stressed. It may also be because they want to gain attention. I will work with you and your child to establish when and why they are biting. I will observe the child closely to see if certain conditions or situations trigger the behaviour and then work with them to try and avoid the incidents occurring. This may involve altering the child’s routine, giving them more one to one attention, purchasing additional resources so sharing is not such a major issue or if it is because a child is teething provide suitable teething resources. I will ensure that if a child is bitten that they are comforted and given lots of attention. I will ensure that any first aid is applied correctly if required and the incident will be recorded in my book and parents asked to sign it. If your child bites then I will remove them from the situation. I will explain to them, according to their age and understanding that biting is unacceptable behaviour. For younger child this may be by my tone of voice and facial expressions rather than lots of words. It may be necessary for me to exclude the child from an activity and use ‘time out’ until they are calm enough to return. I will also encourage the child to apologise to the child they have bitten and work with them to develop strategies to help them deal with the reasons. Many children go through a stage of biting, please don’t be alarmed it doesn’t last forever!

 Sandpit Policy

Whilst sandpits can provide great play and learning opportunities they can also pose several health and safety risks. I will only use sand that is suitable for play and purchased from a recognised source. I will regularly ensure the sand is changed; in between I will sieve for foreign bodies and rinse through with a diluted sterilising agent if applicable. Toxoplasmosis can be spread from cats to humans through dirty sandpits. Toxoplasmosis can harm an unborn child, but is usually a mild illness in children and adults. It causes a rash, swollen glands, fever and feeling unwell. I will ensure the sandpit has adequate drainage to prevent the sand from becoming water logged. Insects can live in damp sand and may bite or sting children I will dispose of spilt sand I will ensure the sandpit is covered to prevent it being used as a litter tray by cats and other visitors to the garden I will ensure that the children are closely supervised whilst playing in the sandpit. I will teach them about keeping the sand low to avoid it getting in their own and others eyes. If you would like your child to wear a hat whilst playing in the sand then please let me know.

 Sun Protection Policy

The damaging effects of exposure to the sun on young skin have recently been well documented. I will do everything I can, working in partnership with you, to ensure that your child is protected. I will need you to provide me with: Sun Cream suitable for your child (high factor) Sun hat (preferably a legionnaires hat to protect the neck) A thin top/cardigan/tshirt with long sleeves I will ensure that your child uses the sun cream that you have provided and wears the hat. I will also avoid spending prolonged periods of time outdoors during the hottest part of the day, and when out will try and protect your child by finding shady areas and using a sunshade on the pushchair. I will encourage your child to drink water regularly to prevent dehydration. I will require you to sign a form giving me permission to apply the sun cream that you have provided.

Special Needs Policy

I believe that every child should have the best possible learning opportunities and I therefore promote inclusive practice. I recognise that some children may have particular needs or disabilities and I take specific action to support and encourage these children within a caring environment. I enable all children to participate fully in learning activities and experiences by providing a curriculum that responds to the individual development of each child. I work closely with parents and other agencies to monitor the child’s progress carefully, and provide effective, additional support to meet the child’s needs. In the event of a special needs child attending my setting I will identify the necessary provision and arrangements to meet the special needs of the children. set high, but achievable, targets for children with special needs with parents and children. liaise with organisations and agencies who are concerned with children’s special needs and disabilities. I will undertake specialist training related to special needs, to improve and update their my and understanding. Early identification and intervention I make regular observations and assessments of all children’s play and progress to enable early identification of children’s special needs. I will monitor the progress of children with identified special needs carefully so that I can plan appropriate provision and support for these children. I share all reports on children’s progress with parents. I will use a graduated approach to identify and meet children’s special needs. This is in line with national and local procedures and involves a systematic cycle of assessment, planning, action and review, recording clear targets and strategies for development and progress. I use a range of strategies, as well as verbal communication, to involve the children in setting and reviewing targets. Children are encouraged to make choices and share their feelings and wishes with staff. Inclusion I will ensure that children with special needs are fully integrated into the daily groupings of the children and their routines. In order to make appropriate and effective provision or adaptations, I will collect information from parents to find out the children’s: visual/hearing needs physical needs emotional needs learning needs self-help needs and communication needs. I will ensure that children with special needs and disabilities are involved in play activities alongside the other children wherever possible.I will encourage and support children with special needs and disabilities to play confidently with other children and make a positive contribution.I will develop activities and experiences to raise the other children’s awareness of positive images of disability and difference.I try to plan open-ended learning activities and experiences to help all the children to participate and learn, although I may need to differentiate for some learning activities and experiences and provide alternative formats or additional equipment and resources for particular children.I use a range of strategies to engage the children in play, and provide learning activities to suit individual children’s most effective style of learning.I make every effort to organise appropriate space for the children’s supported and independent movement. Partnership with parents I encourage parents to work closely with me to support their children’s individual needs.I make time to focus on discussion of the children’s strengths, as well as their needs.I respect the different perspectives and needs of parents.

 Babies and children under 2

The specific needs of babies and children under 2 are met by the procedures outlined in this policy. Sleeping Baby Policy I will discuss with you in detail the sleep routines you have established for your baby and how I can best accommodate them into my own routine and working day as I may have school runs and pre-school pickups to include. These discussions will need to be on going as the sleep needs of your baby will change as s/he grows and develops. As a working parent you too need your sleep so it is vital that I work in partnership with you to provide a sleep routine for your child that fits your requirements. I will need to know how many naps your child normally has, for how long and at what times during the day. When is the latest I can let your child sleep until without it affecting their nighttime routine? Do you want me to wake your baby after a certain length of time or can I let him/her sleep on? What routine do you have to settle your child? Do they have a dummy or comforter? Where does your baby prefer to sleep? I will regularly check your baby when s/he is sleeping, both in person and by using a baby monitor. I will record these and the total time slept on the record sheet.

 Television Policy

I limit the time children in my care are permitted to watch television. The watching of television programmes, DVDs and videos is normally restricted to: An occasional short session after lunch to provide the children with a quiet time to rest and allow their dinner to go down A short session at the end of the day whilst children are waiting to be collected. If a child is feeling a little off colour and needing more rest then it may be appropriate for them to watch more television that day. I ensure that any programmes watched are suitable for all the children in my care. If your child wants to bring a DVD or video to watch at my house please check with me first as it must be appropriate viewing for the younger children. If you ever have any concerns over your child’s sleeping routine please do discuss them with me and we can make arrangements to change times etc if necessary. Written permission has been obtained from all parents of photographed children included on this website
